Indian wicket-keeper left-handed batsman Rishabh Pant smashed the fastest fifty by an Indian in Test cricket as he fired up quick 50 in just 28 balls in the ongoing pink ball test match between India vs Sri Lanka in the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Pant surpassed the 40 year old record of the former Indian 1983 world cup winning captain Kapil Dev with his quickfire 50 on Sunday.
Pant is known for his own versatile nature of playing cricket. He always seems to be an attacking batter and a natural stroke playing player. He continued his show with the bat in the ongoing test match against Sri Lanka where he has badly thrashed the Lankan bowling attack. He has showed no mercy to the visitors and smashed two mighty sixers and 7 boundaries in just 28 balls.
Before Pant, Kapil Dev was named for the fastest fifty by an Indian in test. He set this record in 1982 while playing against Pakistan in Karachi where he scored 50 runs in just 30 balls. While the former CSK all-rounder Lord Shardul Thakur is on the third ranking in the row of fastest fifties by Indians in Tests as he had scored a 31-ball half century against England at the Oval 2021.
Doing so, Pant is also named as the first wicket-keeper in test to hit fastest fifty. He has beaten the record of former Indian captain MS Dhoni and Australia’s Ian Smith, both has scored a 50 in just 34 balls.
However, Pant could not survive longer on the pitch and just after 3 balls after smashing 50 runs, he was caught by Jayawickrama on his own ball.
Former India right-handed opener batter Virender Sehwag has also scored a 32 ball 50 against England in Chennai back in 2008.
Fastest fifties by Indians in Tests:

Kapil Dev – 30 balls (vs Pakistan, Karachi, 1982)
Shardul Thakur – 31 balls (vs England, Oval, 2021)
“Rishabh Pant surpasses Kapil Dev to score the fastest 50 by an Indian in Test cricket… Take a bow, Rishabh,” posted BCCI in its Twitter handle.
India is leading the two-match Test series 1-0 after winning the first game by an innings and 222 runs.
